Battery Rocks and bathing machines
pre-1930s
On the beach are wheeled horse-drawn bathing machines that enabled bathers to change into their swimwear and be taken out into the sea in privacy. On the right of the image, just below the horizon line, is the Battery Rocks and gun house.
Significant changes had to occur before anyone could think of creating a swimming pool near the Battery Rocks. In the 1880s the area was a combination of industry and crowded housing,... regarded by some as no better than slums.
